Palsit Dankuni Tollway Pvt. Ltd., a Special Purpose Vehicle under IRB Infrastructure Trust, has received the Commercial Operation Date (COD) from the National Highways Authority of India for 61.3 km of the Palsit-Dankuni NH-19 BOT Project in West Bengal. The project aims to improve traffic flow and regional connectivity by enhancing traffic flow and allowing toll collection at revised tariff rates, including a 47% increase. The project is expected to improve toll collections by approximately ₹100 crore annually.

IRB Infrastructure Trust, a leading infrastructure investment trust (Invite) backed by IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd., has successfully achieved Commercial Operations Date (COD) for its Palsit–Dankuni section of National Highway 19 (NH19) in West Bengal. This achievement is a significant milestone under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model and further consolidates IRB’s position as one of India’s largest highway developers.

Project Overview and Strategic Importance

The Palsit–Dankuni corridor is a 63.83 km six-lane stretch forming a crucial segment of the NH19, which connects major industrial zones in West Bengal to the rest of eastern and northern India. NH19, formerly known as NH2 and part of the Golden Quadrilateral project, plays a vital role in freight and passenger movement between Kolkata and Delhi. The stretch is a key component of India’s national highway infrastructure modernization initiative. Its completion contributes to easing congestion, improving logistics efficiency, and reducing travel time across highway network.

Role of IRB Infrastructure Trust JV

The project was undertaken by a Joint Venture under IRB Infrastructure Trust, which operates as a public-private partnership (PPP) model. This marks another successful BOT project under IRB’s expanding national highway portfolio. The total project cost is estimated at over ₹2,400 crore and includes advanced engineering, safety features, and service facilities. This development follows IRB’s consistent delivery of large-scale BOT projects, as seen reinforcing their reputation as a reliable partner for national infrastructure growth.

Boost to West Bengal’s Industrial and Logistics Growth

The completion of this project will significantly benefit Dankuni, a major logistics and industrial hub, and Palsit, which acts as a key junction point on NH19. This corridor enhances connectivity to major industrial belts such as Asansol, Durgapur, and Kolkata’s port zones, aiding regional economic development. In alignment with the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), this project supports India’s aim to build robust, high-capacity transport corridors. Explore more.

Toll Operations and Future Outlook

With COD achieved, toll collection will begin on the Palsit–Dankuni section, ensuring long-term revenue generation under the BOT model. This also adds to IRB Invite’s consistent performance in toll-operate-transfer models and enhances the asset base of the trust. Investors and stakeholders can expect improved financial visibility as more BOT projects in the portfolio become revenue-generating.

About the Project

The Palsit-Dankuni stretch is a six-lane, 63.83 km corridor on National Highway 19, formerly known as NH2 and part of the Golden Quadrilateral (GQ). It is a vital route connecting Kolkata with Delhi and forms a key link in India’s Eastern Freight Corridor. According to NHAI, NH19 is among the busiest transport corridors in the country, supporting a high volume of commercial vehicle traffic. The project is valued at over ₹2,400 crore and is operated under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, where the private entity finances and maintains the highway, collecting toll revenue over a concession period.

Strategic Importance in Eastern India

Dankuni is emerging as a logistics and warehousing hub for East India, with proximity to Kolkata Port, the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), and multiple industrial zones. The completion of this highway section will significantly reduce travel time and improve cargo movement. According to enhanced connectivity through projects like NH19 is essential for boosting trade, regional integration, and infrastructure-led economic development in states like West Bengal.

Role of IRB Infrastructure Trust

The COD achievement strengthens IRB Infrastructure Trust’s operational portfolio. IRB is India’s first listed Infrastructure Investment Trust (Invite) in the roads sector and manages multiple toll-operate-transfer and BOT assets across the country. More about IRB’s national portfolio can be found on IRB Infar’s official site. IRB has previously executed similar large-scale projects such as the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway and parts of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, positioning itself as a key player in the country’s highway privatization efforts.

Conclusion

The successful COD of the Palsit–Dankuni NH19 project underscores IRB Infra Trust JV’s technical and operational capabilities. It represents not only a milestone for West Bengal’s transport sector but also a testament to the success of public-private partnerships in advancing India’s highway infrastructure.
