NHAI & DMRC collaborate to strengthen bridges, tunnels and other structures Breakthrough

NHAI has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to review bridge designs, safety aspects of NHAI projects, and capacity building of officials. The agreement includes reviewing designs of all ongoing projects, randomly selected structures, stand-alone bridges, and special structures at the Detailed Project Repot stage. DMRC will also help NHAI review construction methodologies and organize customized training programs for officials. Signed in September 2023, this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims to enhance the design, construction, and safety standards of bridges Tunnels, and other critical structures on the national highways network. A primary objective of this collaboration is to strengthen NHAI’s ‘Design Division,’ which is responsible for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of vital infrastructure elements such as bridges, tunnels, and retaining walls across the national highways. Under the agreement, DMRC will provide expert services to review the designs of all bridges and structures in ongoing projects (NHAI)

This includes evaluating randomly selected bridges, tunnels, reinforced earth walls, and other specialized structures. Additionally, DMRC will assist in reviewing stand-alone bridges and special structures during the Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage, ensuring That each project meets the highest standards of safety and efficiency Beyond design reviews, the MoU also focuses on enhancing the construction methodologies employed in highway projects. DMRC will support NHAI in assessing construction techniques, temporary structures, lifting and launching methods, and pre-stressing methods for select bridges and structures. This collaborative approach aims to incorporate best practices from urban metro projects into the expansive national highways network, thereby improving the overall quality and safety of infrastructure projects.
