The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and City and Industrial Development Corporation have agreed to build a Rs 15,000 crore Airport Express metro line, connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport. The line will have a daily ridership of 9 lakh passengers and will be partially underground on the Mumbai side and elevated via the Ghatkopar-Manhood link road. The project is expected to be completed by 2025. Mumbai, India’s financial hub, is set to witness a major leap in its urban transport infrastructure with the announcement of a ₹15,000 crore Airport Express Metro Line. Designed to ensure quick, seamless connectivity between the city and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Project Overview

International Airport, the project aims to transform passenger travel and reduce traffic congestion on key arterial roads. The proposed Airport Express Line will be a high-speed, dedicated corridor connecting key city hubs to the airport in record time. Equipped with advanced metro technology, the trains are expected to operate at speeds exceeding 100 km/h, ensuring minimal travel time. This strategic infrastructure development is aligned with the city’s growing need for efficient, mass rapid transport solutions. The project will be designed to minimize carbon emissions and promote sustainable travel—aligning with Mumbai’s broader environmental goals and India’s net-zero targets (Government of India).

Connectivity and Benefits

The new metro line will link crucial business districts, residential zones, and transport hubs, enabling passengers to travel from central Mumbai to the airport in less than 25 minutes. It will also serve as an alternative to road-based travel, reducing the burden on congested routes like the Western Express Highway. Similar to Mumbai Metro Line 3, this project will feature modern stations, seamless interchanges, and state-of-the-art facilities for passengers. Apart from improving connectivity, the Airport Express Metro Line is expected to generate thousands of jobs during its construction phase and boost tourism by offering an efficient travel option for domestic and international visitors.

Technological Features

The project will also enhance Mumbai’s standing as a global business destination, much like how the Delhi Airport Express Line transformed travel in the capital city. The line will feature automated ticketing systems, real-time passenger information, and premium travel coaches. With air-conditioned coaches, luggage-friendly interiors, and Wi-Fi-enabled trains, it will cater especially to air travellers. Drawing inspiration from global examples like the Hong Kong Airport Express, Mumbai’s version aims to combine speed, comfort, and convenience. As part of the city’s green mobility push, the Airport Express Metro Line will use energy-efficient rolling stock and regenerative braking systems. (Mumbai Metro)

Timeline and Execution

Construction is set to begin shortly after final approvals, with a target completion date in the next five to six years. The Maharashtra government and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will oversee the execution, ensuring coordination with ongoing projects like Mumbai Metro Line-2B and Mumbai Coastal Road for integrated connectivity. Work on the project will commence after securing all clearances, with completion targeted within five to six years. The Maharashtra government, in collaboration with MMRDA, will manage execution, ensuring smooth coordination with other major projects like Mumbai Coastal Road and the Trans Harbour Link for an integrated transport network.
