India’s maritime infrastructure is set for a transformative leap with the planned development of Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra, which is expected to add a massive 23.2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) to the country’s container handling capacity. Strategically positioned along the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), the port is being developed as a joint venture between the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), under the guidance of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

Once completed, Vadhavan Port will be among the top 10 container ports in the world. The port is also being designed with deep-draft berthing capabilities to accommodate ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs), which will further strengthen India’s transhipment capacity.
