Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has launched development projects worth over ₹4,800 crore in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, focusing on critical sectors such as aviation, roads, ports, railways, and power infrastructure. The New Terminal Building at Thoothukudi Airport, developed at a cost of around ₹450 crore, was inaugurated to meet the growing aviation demands of the southern region. The terminal will be equipped to handle 1,350 passengers during peak hours and 20 lakh passengers.

Annually, with future expansion capacity up to 1,800 peak hour passengers and 25 lakh passengers annually. The infrastructure is expected to enhance regional air connectivity and stimulate tourism, trade, and investment in southern Tamil Nadu. The Prime Minister also dedicated two highway projects, the 4-laning of the 50 km Sethiyathope–Cholapuram stretch of NH-36, and the 6-laning of the 5.16 km NH-138 Thoothukudi Port Road. The Prime Minister also dedicated three key railway infrastructure projects to boost sustainable and efficient connectivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tamil Nadu marked a pivotal moment in the state’s infrastructure growth as he inaugurated and laid the foundation for multiple projects worth over ₹4,800 crore. These initiatives span various sectors, including railways, energy, housing, and connectivity, aiming to catalyse regional development and uplift the local economy.

“Indian Railways Modernisation Initiatives”

During his visit, PM Modi inaugurated new railway lines, modernised stations, and track-doubling works designed to enhance rail connectivity in southern Tamil Nadu. Notable among them was the doubling of critical railway sections that improve freight and passenger train flow between industrial hubs and ports. The new and upgraded stations will serve thousands of daily commuters, reducing travel time and improving safety. These rail projects align with Indian Railways’ broader vision of creating a modern, efficient and green transport system across India. (Infrastructure for Railways)

infrastructure projects, including substations

PM Modi also laid the foundation for several power infrastructure projects, including substations and grid upgrades. These are designed to stabilise electricity supply in rural and semi-urban belts of Tamil Nadu. The projects will ensure uninterrupted power for agriculture, MSMEs, and households, supporting economic growth and sustainable living. This move also supports India’s energy transition goals by increasing grid efficiency and reducing transmission losses.

Affordable Housing Under PMAY

A significant portion of the ₹4,800 crore investment is earmarked for Affordable Housing Under PMAY-Urban, targeting economically weaker sections. Thousands of housing units will be constructed in cities like Madurai and Tirunelveli, offering improved living conditions to low-income families. PM Modi emphasised the government’s commitment to urban welfare and inclusive growth during his address. This initiative is in line with the goal of “Housing for All,” ensuring every citizen has access to safe and dignified housing.

These infrastructure projects are expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, especially in construction, engineering, and logistics. With better roads, electrification, and connectivity, industries in Tamil Nadu will find it easier to access markets and scale up operations. PM Modi noted that these projects are a “stepping stone” to transforming Tamil Nadu into a logistics and manufacturing hub for South India. (Rail and Transport)
